I’m a big fan of pro wrestlers protecting their finish. It’s not only old school, it’s basic psychology that was put in place for a reason. I understand times change and things evolve, but there are certain rules, just like in other sports, that should never be altered or changed. Protecting your finish is one of those rules. When you start letting guys kick out three, four, five times, where you’ve got to hit your move six or seven times to win, that number will only keep going up, and it’s a dead end. If you’re at that point, invest in a new finish and get it over. Put equity into it and recondition the crowd to seeing that move one time. Use your old finisher as a signature move and occasionally score a pinfall with it, but keep it special. When it takes six or seven finishers to beat one opponent, every other wrestler you beat with one looks weaker by comparison, and no one should want that for their brand. We have to respect and love the business enough to keep its core psychology intact. There are plenty of ways to create excitement through combos, near falls, and false finishes. Some wrestlers may even evolve by having multiple finishers and protecting each of them to keep variety alive. Letting guys kick out of top rope finishers or multiple finishers just dilutes the art. This is what I see as someone who’s always protected his finish. The Shell Shock has one of the highest finishing rates in WWE history, and that’s because it was treated with value. When you invest in your finish, you protect your story and your credibility until the very end of your career. And that’s the last bite.
