You can add cold water, BUT the engine has to be running when adding, if not running you risk cracking cylinder head or block

Rule number one! Ambient temp water is what should be used! Older vehicles did not use coolant reservoirs’ so start engine add water until fill proper levels!

You cant just add cold water it has to be distilled cold water. because you if you use purified cold water you're basically putting chlorine in it and it's going to overheat constantly.
