@jonjon.jpeg: Telescoping houses show us that buildings aren’t frozen in time. Each addition, each shift, is a record of a family adapting, a physical memory of change. Stewart Brand taught us that buildings learn. But it’s not just buildings. Neighborhoods and cities do too. When we allow them to evolve (one room, one house, one block at a time) we make places that can grow wiser, not just older. #architecture #housing #cityplanning #irbanism #charleston

My home telescopes out the sides. I live in a vintage motor coach with 2 slide out rooms.

I never knew there was a term for this. I immediately thought of this house near me.

Have you noticed zoning policies keep up with the times? It’s a thing that I hear major real estate companies complain about but I feel they don’t have the best intentions and only want to build for max profit only.

Oh man I’m so glad you’re in Charleston! I’m a history professor and preservationist in Florence a couple of hours away. It would be so cool to walk those streets with you!

My 1950s neighborhood had had more carports closed in than those that remain. The driveways have been widened to accommodate more than one car, and the inside has been adapted to house our stuff that we have been accumulating over the last few generations or adding on additional bathrooms to fit the modern expectation. Most houses were 2/1, or 3/1. Now they are 2/2 or 3/2 or even 4/2.

My house looks like this! We’re about to put shade cloth over the porch. Maybe in 20 years that would be an addition/enclosed porch

This is very cool. Every time I pass a cookie cutter houses/communities I gag. No character!! This further explains my heart for unique homes.
