If you see someone stealing food, no you didn’t. NO. You. Didn’t.

The way these comments fail to realize that the employee could take legal action based on the grey areas here, too. “Stealing” free food because he took “too many” - how many is too many? Have they stated an allotted amount for everyone to take per day? If not, how can they say what’s “too many?” You could argue common sense, but a court case could argue that without clear and precise instructions, the employee didn’t violate a rule because the rule didn’t exist. Aunt Bri is covering both the employee AND the company here, which is her job. Leading with compassion not only allows the employee a chance to be guided to better resources, but also prevents the company from liability of unfair (and possibly discriminatory) treatment.

I was sleeping in my car with 4 children when I worked as a Deputy Clerk of court for District Court. I was well dressed and clean every day for court and I was also starving most days so my kids could eat.

we had a gentleman who kept wearing shirts with holes in them, sometimes too small as well. lots of complaints. turns out he was living out of his car. the HR team denied write ups and instead got him resources that gave him a room and a staple wardrobe. he was a whole new man after that and became such an asset for the company. all it takes it support.

that kind of thing hits home for me. one of the worst feelings in the world was when I had to ask my employer for food bc I had none at home. I had left a dv marriage, and was thankfully receiving WIC, but my snap benefits app was "lost" 3 times before finally getting those benefits. I took the first job I was offered to have money, but covered up what was really going on at home really well. it was hard. I can't imagine being called into HR over it and have that embarrassment while struggling. 🥺

If your first thought when somebody is taking all the food they can from your company events is to fire them and not to ask if everything’s OK at home maybe you shouldn’t be a manager lol

This is a tough one. Leading with empathy and offering support could reveal a real need but it also could just be a thief, and that should be taken seriously too. A few extra snacks is one thing but taking cases is another.

I'm homeless and still keep a job. I literally sleep in my car half the week and in my store the other half. All my coworkers think I live 2 hours away and that's why I hang around so much. You never know what your coworkers are really going through

I feel like a lot of these comments are missing the point. He is going to be talked to, in confidence, to get to the WHY. A boss can say 'Hey, stop taking all the snacks!' with no idea why it's happening. Talking to each other as equals to resolve the base issue is absolutely the best solution.

Instead of a write up how about you pay the person enough to live on? Like ppl should be able to pay their bills AND eat more than once a day.

I disagree with you on this. There could be several people in tough situations, so much so that these snacks can be the only things they can get. And for one person to consume it all, even after being talked to, is unacceptable. He keeps doing it, the company will stop providing snacks for the employees.

I totally disagree with you on this. I understand that if he’s struggling and he takes some but also leaves some then no big deal, but to constantly take everything even after being spoken to about it is pure greed.

While I see and understand the compassion, sometimes? Sometimes people are just greedy. They see boxes of snacks that they would normally buy for themselves and they take it to avoid spending their own money.
