@yuvaltheterrible: We have this tendency to make tragedies out of things that are already tragic. We should stop. All excerpts are from “Columbine” by Dave Cullen. #guns #gunviolence
manipulating the facts of a tragedy to serve your political narrative will always be reprehensible

I did a book report on "She Said Yes" in middle school and as an adult I think her parents did her a disservice misrepresenting their daughter

Let’s shift the focus from gun violence and talk about god for no reason.

Human memory is notoriously unreliable (especially in traumatic situations) so this makes sense.

This broke my heart. If I lived in America, I'd be terrified to let my child go to school.

Martyrs tend to be myths, if not in their realism but in their symbolism

Why Cassie and not Val? Cassie can’t speak for herself, which is convenient for those who want to speak for her. (To be clear, I am not speaking about her parents/family: I can’t judge anything they believe in light of their loss)

I knew Rachel’s story had been exaggerated. I had no idea it was because of a mis-remembered person who said it!

Another (maybe unintentional, idk) goal of “She Said Yes”, in my opinion, is to further the narrative that the only way to get sober post-addiction is to “find God”. I read the book when I was like 12, I grew up around addicts, and it really felt like the synopsis of the book was “belief in the evangelical iteration of God is the only way to get sober”. Which is also a narrative that many rehabs push, also, tbh. The book definitely left a weird taste in my mouth.

the “you’re wrong about” podcast has a great episode about this. its so understandable that in face of tragedy people get things wrong because theres so much emotion and tragedy and information all so fast all at once. but its so important to go back and get the important stuff right, especially if the facts are being used like this.

It’s so emotionally intelligent and evolved to not accuse him of lying. To understand that it may not be lying if he believes it and that he may be lying to himself. I wish I understood this when I was younger. Could have saved me a lot of grief. It’s hard for me to give people like this grace when it affects me personally.

This is my first time hearing this information. Every death was tragic that day. It must have been hard for the witnesses of the real speaker of those words to decide to stay silent.

People find it too difficult to live in a world without meaning so we construct narratives to make things make sense. We all do it, every day

I’m sorry, two days? I know very little avout Columbine, but leaving the bodies for two days before burying them is insane to me. I can’t imagine how their families felt.
