I'm an agnostic but i disagree 😭 church serves many more purposes that therapy does not

Yup most folks say I’ll pray for you instead of being the answer to their prayer.

the church I grew up going to viewed therapy, or any form of mental health counseling, psychiatric help/medication as “wrong” and seen as a “lack of faith” in god. So may places push this narrative and its dangerous

Pastors can also “counsel” but are not licensed in the same way of therapists and often undermine mental health. 😩😩

YUP!!!!! Bc I’ve gone for 2 years and don’t believe in any religion any more. When people say “god got me through it” I’m like I can’t relate . I did the hard work for 2 years and I MYSELF healed myself and got myself through everything.

I have a friend who is struggling a lot with his mental health and he converted to Christianity during that time and I genuinely don’t think that he would’ve become a Christian if it weren’t for the fact that he was struggling and had no resources to support him other than the church

and there is a direct correlation to a lot of stricter religious groups they dont “believe” in therapy because they secretly know it is truly what they need but if they admit that then they can’t manipulate people!

as someone traumatized by her "I don't need therapy, I have God" mother, I really wish people would normalize going to therapy and working their issues out

This is true!! I’ve been struggling mentally but not able to go to therapy because I don’t insurance. I started to ask for god to take my pain away and I felt relief. At the same time I just happened to be reading a book about atheism and immediately was like wait what am I doing?? I don’t even believe in god. I just had no other options and tried to lie to myself to feel better.

I was lucky that I was a natural doubter even when I was trying to the whole religion thing. I could never really buy into it. But I couldn’t access therapy and so I had to learn coping mechanisms on my own. Therapy could’ve saved me a lot of trouble. Though I still think I could benefit from therapy. But even now it’s not really accessible to me.
