this is one of the edits I've seen that actually gets the framing of the song. It's not about an ACTUAL SAILOR OR A COWBOY you guys, it's about a run of the mill man who writes run of the mill songs, aggrandises himself or is aggrandised by others (not sure which) and gets praised as a genius. while female songwriters are out there like a raw nerve of vulnerability being mined for their emotions, getting used up at best or ignored at worst. At least in the edits this guy is a creator being looked at by his female counterpart. That is apt.

This is truly the most seen I have ever been and the most understood Syd has ever been. I come back on the daily to rewatch this edit because you capture so perfectly the feeling that no matter what, Camry makes sure Sydney is never going to win. Whether he means to or not, Carmen as shoved syd down not just in his shadow but behind it, like there’s no one behind him and he’s propped up all on his own. He throws her around, absolute whiplash from screamimg degrading abusive remarks to telling her she’s the bear, all whole never actually doing anything to cultivate her clear talents. In fact he punishes her for it. For being talented. For being human. And he just perpetuates the abuse he experienced, ignoring the fact that he was traumatized to instead see himself as some golden boy who did it all on his own and made the world he lives in.
