#GREEKMYTHOLOGY In Greek mythology, the Harpies were terrifying winged spirits known as the “snatchers” or “swift thieves.” They were usually described as creatures with the bodies of birds and the faces of women, flying through storms with screaming winds around them. The Harpies were daughters of the sea god Thaumas and the ocean nymph Electra, and they served the will of the gods, especially Zeus. Unlike monsters that destroyed out of pure evil, the Harpies were more like instruments of punishment. Their most famous story is connected to King Phineus, a blind prophet who was cursed by Zeus for revealing too many divine secrets to humans. Every day, whenever food was placed before him, the Harpies would swoop down from the sky, stealing the meal from his hands and contaminating whatever remained with a horrible stench, leaving him starving and miserable. Eventually, the heroes known as the Argonauts arrived during their quest for the Golden Fleece. Two of them, the winged brothers Zetes and Calais, chased the Harpies through the skies to stop them. Depending on the version of the myth, the Harpies were either killed or spared after promising never to torment Phineus again. Over time, the Harpies became symbols of greed, punishment, and relentless suffering. Ancient writers described them as both beautiful and horrifying, creatures caught between human and beast, storm and spirit. Their image survived far beyond Greek mythology, and today the word “harpy” is still sometimes used to describe someone cruel, aggressive, or endlessly tormenting. #harpy #greekmyths #greekgods #greekmythologytiktok
