I hope this doesn’t influence other pet owners to DIY teeth cleaning on their pets. After all, it’s still best for someone professional to do dental prophylaxis to them, most especially if the case has gone worse already. Generally, this is done under sedation to prevent stress to the animal.

As a vet tech, it sounds like your situation is unique due to your pups health. However for the majority of people watching- this is NOT recommended. It does not get anything under the gum line (where a lot of plaque/tartar linger). There is no polishing which is key to maintain tooth health. There’s also no X-rays taken - we do these to see under the gum line as teeth can look okay on the surface but actually need extraction due to abscess, decay, etc. I know it’s expensive but a routine cleaning for $800 can save you from a $3k bill with multiple extractions.

You never know the extent of dental disease until you for full mouth radiographs- disease can live silently under the gum line for years and cause irreversible bone loss to the jaw, potentially causing a mandibular fracture or causing damage to the kidneys and heart

we did testing to make sure ours could go under for a cleaning and some teeth removed they told us he probably wouldnt wake up again so we opted not to hes a 16 yr old beagle :(

Plaque off is a a power you can add to the food to help prevent plaque buildup by changing the ph of the mouth! Try that as well:)

This is fine just please look into getting a polisher and med to fine polish paste as well because you’re leaving microscopic scratches on the tooth so it could damage the tooth and it leaves a rough surface that plaque will just build up again quickly
