he did loved her, i've felt the same about him, every time he saw her in his memories he was remembering something he will never forget, he accepted it in the car when he starts crying and reviving all those memories in his head, everything he started noticing after she died it's him discovering and getting true to himself. That is my interpretation because i have felt like him for years after someone i loved too much to explain died
