Shahid King Bolsen, an American convert to Islam, was detained in the UAE after being convicted of killing a German engineer, Martin Steiner, in Sharjah in 2006. Prosecutors said Bolsen lured Steiner to his home through an online ad, drugged him with chloroform, and the man died; Bolsen claimed it was accidental and that he intended only to incapacitate him. He was sentenced to death in 2007 but later received a pardon after paying blood money to the victim’s family under UAE law (diyah, a lawful form of financial compensation in cases of unintentional killing). Following the settlement and the family’s forgiveness, his death sentence was commuted and he was released
