NO SIR E :
He’s been lucky to have grown up in California where his sound could get traction otherwise he’d be a Zumiez manager in a dead mall doing music on the side right now

Exactly. I love his music, but does try to use pretentious interests to unalign himself with the optics of being black, sort of to a fault because it's comes across as him trying to be like, "I'm black, but better"

this is so true i love him down but even with the jordan’s stuff. i know ppl can change etc & he said this in his new interview with zane lowe but it was so funny to me cuz it seemed like he looked down on dudes wearing jordans etc cuz he wears vans/converses now all of a sudden he’s like “Yeah dude i love Jordan 13s now dude it’s ok to change” which is true but it was funny like Oh ok!

Being black in America is so hard cus it makes being perceived as “stereotypically” black as such a negative. But as you get older you see how black people influence literally everything in art and more! So you as a black person realize the nuance that black people have and you start to appreciate it

I feel like he learned this lesson way too late, when most of us learn this lesson in like…high school. Maybe college. He learned it when he was pushing 30 and that’s insane to me.

As one of the alt black kids with who also were into black cultural norms he alienated, he’s just now starting to publicly embrace his cultural roots like being rocking Jordan’s, having a gangsta grillz tape and while i appreciate it it doesn’t excuse how heavily he leaned into racist edgelord themes in music & in merchandise

I think a person who navigates this well is chance the rapper. HUGE white following but never let it take it away from the fact that’s he’s a black kid from Chicago and stayed true to that. Instead of chasing the whites and their acceptance he let them follow him instead of that makes sense
