Stay out of ours.” Newsom flashed a thumbs-up at the protesters as he walked into the event. Inside, before an audience who had waited an hour and a half to hear him speak, he made a pitch for why voters in a part of the state rife with West Coast skepticism should view his California roots as an asset. He described receiving a call last year from Democrats in the Texas Legislature. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was redrawing the state’s congressional maps to help Republicans maintain control of Congress. Democrats didn’t hold enough seats in the Legislature to stop him, so they asked Newsom for help. And he delivered, leading a successful ballot measure campaign that redrew California’s congressional maps to shift an equal number of congressional seats in Democrats’ favor. It was a story Newsom told at nearly every stop on his two-day swing through South Carolina. And it encapsulates his pitch to voters as he embarks on a likely presidential run: that his leadership of the most powerful blue state in the country means he has a track record of fighting President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement and winning. “We can fight fire with fire,” he told one of the cheering audiences that flocked to see him.
