5 things most people think are just being “Type A” but can actually be OCD: 1️⃣ Triple-checking your work before you can submit it. It might look like you’re just thorough, but you could be rereading the same email or assignment over and over because you’re terrified you missed a mistake, wrote something inappropriate, or did something that could have consequences. 2️⃣ Needing everything planned out ahead of time. Being organized is one thing. With OCD, planning can become a way to eliminate uncertainty, and you might feel intensely anxious when something changes or you can’t know exactly how things will go. 3️⃣ Redoing things that were already done correctly. You rewrite the sentence, reorganize the document, or start a task over because something doesn’t feel quite right. Even when you know it’s objectively fine, your brain won’t let you move on. 4️⃣ Being extremely early because being late feels unacceptable. You might leave ridiculously early, repeatedly check traffic, or calculate exactly when you need to leave because the possibility of being late and inconveniencing someone feels unbearable. 5️⃣ Holding yourself to impossibly high standards. What looks like perfectionism can sometimes be driven by OCD. A small mistake might lead to hours of rumination about what it means about you, whether someone noticed, or whether you need to fix it. Being organized, ambitious, or detail-oriented doesn’t mean you have OCD. The difference can be the urgency and anxiety behind the behavior. With OCD, it can feel like you have to check, plan, redo, or get something exactly right in order to prevent something bad, get certainty, or finally feel okay enough to move on. If you think you might be experiencing OCD, help is available. OCD is highly treatable with specialized, evidence-based therapy.
