“You’re holding him too much.” “He’s going to expect to sleep on you.” “You’re spoiling him.” Maybe. But those comments don’t mean much to me anymore. Because there was a time when I couldn’t hold Riley the way I wanted to. There was a time when our cuddles were limited by wires, monitors and hospital rules. There were moments when all I wanted was to pick him up and keep him close, but I couldn’t. So now, when he falls asleep on my chest, I don’t see a bad habit. I see a privilege. One I wasn’t always sure we’d have. Sometimes I look down at him sleeping and think about that tiny baby in NICU. How desperately I wished for ordinary moments like this. How I dreamed about bringing him home. How I couldn’t wait for the day he could nap safely on me. Those early days were some of the hardest of my life. And even now, on the sleepless nights, I still think back to them. One thing that carried me through then, and still carries me through now, is knowing there are other mums walking difficult roads too. When I look at the map, I don’t just see dots. I see stories. A mum sitting beside an incubator. A mum feeding her baby for the fourth time that night. A mum rocking a teething baby. A mum pumping milk in the middle of the night. A mum wondering if she’s doing enough. Every dot is someone loving their baby with everything they have. Every dot is someone carrying something you can’t see. And somehow, remembering that makes motherhood feel a little less lonely. So no, I’m not worried about “spoiling” him. For now, I’ll soak up every cuddle he wants to give me. Because I know just how precious it is to finally be able to hold him close. 💛 #momlife #newmom #NICUbaby #postpartum #motherhood
