Children’s feet are still developing for years, which means footwear can directly influence how the foot grows, moves, and functions. Research has shown measurable differences between children who grow up mostly barefoot and children who grow up primarily in shoes. ( I can send you all links to resources) 📎 Hollander et al., 2017 — Scientific Reports Study of 810 children and adolescents: Children who grew up habitually barefoot showed: • Higher foot arches • Better big toe alignment • Stronger natural foot structure The researchers found that habitual shoe use was associated with “reduction in foot arch and hallux angles.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5556098/ 📎 Zech et al., 2018 — Frontiers in Pediatrics Habitually barefoot children performed significantly better in balance and jumping tests, especially ages 6–10. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5996942/ 📎 Yao et al., 2023 — Review on Children’s Footwear Researchers found that footwear can alter gait mechanics, foot motion, loading patterns, and sensory input during development. https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9032/11/10/1418 Flat feet are far more common in kids who grow up in restrictive shoes than in kids who grow up barefoot. The foot is not “done developing” at age 2 or 3. It is adapting every single day to the environment around it. That does NOT mean kids should never wear shoes. It means the type of shoe matters. The shoe should protect the foot. Not weaken it. That matters. 💬 Did you grow up barefoot or always in shoes? Comment below. I’m curious what you notice now as an adult. 💾 Save this before your next shoe shopping trip. 📤 Share this with a parent who has been told flat feet are “just genetic.”
