Don't ask if you can get some food, like they're doing you a favor. Just say with confidence, "Table for one, please". Then pull out a book and read instead of awkwardly looking around. This is very common.

As a solo traveler I find the eating alone in a restaurant the hardest part.I love room service and grabbing to go things to eat in a scenic spot or even a girl dinner kind of thing. I ate an ice-cream for dinner on a bench beneath Edinburgh castle and it was spectacular! If it isn't fun for me, I skip it. That's the beauty of traveling solo ❤

You just go in There with confidence ask for a table of one or if you can sit at the bar if there is one. Pretend you do this all the time . Bring a book if you don’t want to socialize . Act like you belong and that this no big deal and you do it all the time. It’s perfectly ok to go alone !

I go to dinner by myself, it gets easier the more you do it. And, some places are better than others. Read a book on your phone. I think places are getting used to solo travelers. Last night there were 2 tables of 1 besides my own. You can do this!

I eat alone all the time. Just walk in like it's normal (it is). When they ask how many I say one. Don't ask if it's okay.

I know it’s hard at first. Think of it this way. They can turn the table faster and make more money. While you are in Scotland- I’ve been traveling this weekend by myself in Wales.

Hey so devil’s advocate here—I worked in a restaurant for over 10 years from hostessing, serving, to bartending. Usually they have to seat you so that the kitchen doesn’t get overwhelmed. Meaning, there was probably several tables that got sat right before you so they need to keep a steady pace of seating. I’m positive it didn’t have anything to do with you dining solo.

I traveled solo to Peru & Italy…it might feel awkward at first, but you just do it. I enjoyed many good meals out and sometimes the servers are especially nice.

Girl, honestly, I worked in restaurants all through college and it may have been that they were understaffed in the kitchen that you couldn't see. So, even if tables are open, that doesn't mean they may not be busy in the back. I also never worked anywhere that had a problem with solo diners. Just hold your head high and get in there! 💖

i'm so sorry you experienced that. It's hardly the warm Highlands welcome you'd expect. Go in, head held high, they obviously don't know you're a social media star 😉 ✨

But you were the one who made a big deal about it. Your money is as good as anyone else’s and you are entitled to eat a meal. Walk in with your head held high and ask for a table for one. You don’t owe anyone an explanation and you’re not asking for a hand. I don’t understand this mindset at all. I do a lot of things by myself and never felt the need to apologizeor explain.

When you said “can I get some food” I think they thought you were asking for free food, like you were homeless. And then the explanation sounds like he was just trying to come up with an excuse. I live in Scotland as an American and go out to eat by myself all the time. You literally walk in and say “table for one please” and that’s it. Take a book, watch a show on your phone, strike up a conversation with the server.

My daughter went to uni in Glasgow. She went to a restaurant by herself. Which she wasn’t thrilled about but she was trying to be confident. She walked in (with an onlinereservation for 1) and told the hostess it was just for one. They sat her at a 6 top table in the middle of the busy restaurant. It was a pizza restaurant so it took forever to get food. And people would come to get seated and just stared at her at this giant table all by herself. She never went out by herself again for the rest of that year she was there. 😆

as a fellow solo traveler, I totally understand how you feel!!! One thing that I noticed in Scotland when I wasn't solo, was this same to hesitancy to seat my friend and I without reservations. It could have been more about that and not wanting to overwhelm the kitchen than about you being solo! Keep it up and take up space! We grow the most in uncomfortable situations ❤

You deserve to take up space and have a meal. Don’t let some awkward kids keep you from experiencing good food.

It’s definitely okay to be on your own! The more you do it, the more confident you’ll become. I always felt awkward eating alone when I was younger, but I learned no one else really noticed. They were all enjoying their own meals. I do like to read while I eat alone, if the restaurant is not too busy. You can do this!!

I traveled through England and went to Paris over the holidays last year by myself. I tried to go places where I could make a reservation so they knew upfront I was by myself. There were some restaurants that wouldn’t take reservations for one and those I avoided. 💕
