In Belgium we have Sinterklaas, which is basically Santa just a tad bit different. Whenever I really wanted a toy, my mom would say that we'd put it on my list for Sinterklaas so he'd know what to get me. Or if it was close to my birthday she'd say to remember it and tell family that's what I wanted for my b day.

My partner and I have a WhatsApp chat called ‘Santa’ so we take a photo and send it to the chat ‘for Santa’ but also as a reminder for us 🤣

Highly recommend bargaining with them as well. Say you can have one thing. If they find one and done, we’ll jobb done. But say they also want something else have them decide which item. If they struggle to choose hold both items behind you and have them pick an arm. Made shopping fun.

id have preferred this over my parents getting me the thing then shaming me for wanting it/shaming me for expressing gratitude in the way *they wanted me to so now receiving gifts and or buying things for myself gives me anxiety attacks. Keep up the good work momma 😭

Instead of one item it may even be fun once they’re old enough to add/subtract to give them a dollar amount to spend and if they pick a few things help them learn to justify what they like more/the cost it has.
