@dr.mark.bowers: Why Neurodivergent Kids Spit—and What Actually Helps Spitting isn’t just gross—it’s a red flag from your child’s nervous system. 🧠 For many autistic or neurodivergent kids, spitting is a stress response, not defiance. Yes, it needs to stop—but it also needs to be understood. Instead of punishing, teach what to do when emotions spill over. Because behavior is communication—even when it comes out as spit. #meltdown #childdevelopment #sensoryprocessing #emotionalregulation #gentleparenting
OK, but what about spitting when it’s not in response to an emotion necessarily or if it is in response to an emotion it’s more than just being upset or frustrated but when he gets excited or when he’s super happy or any of the above… It’s like he’s just seeking a sensory input. And trying to replace it doesn’t seem to work chew sticks, necklaces, bracelets nothing seems to work. He just seems to enjoy the spitting. And also just carrying a large amount of spit in his mouth lol it’s pretty gross and I’m really not sure what to do to help it.

Thank you for addressing this specific thing. Spitting is the worst, especially when it’s not your kid that spit on you. Sharing with my co-teachers.

I work with my families and coach them to tell their child they can spit in the trash can or toilet in a calm manner and this usually works well and when they are no longer getting attention for it the behavior fades. Great topic 👏

Do you have tips for autistic toddlers who clench their jaw?? My son seems to do it when he is excited and overstimulated ! We have tried chewies, redirection, and just saying “no clenching” and nothing seems to click!!

How timely. We had a report that our son was maybe spitting at school. He was insistent he hasn’t been spitting. Over the weekend, I noticed he is sometimes ending his sentences with like a little spit or exasperated puff of air at times. I don’t think he notices that he’s doing it. I’ve called his attention to it and that this is likely what others at school are calling spitting. I hope I didn’t make him self conscious about it. I am going to share his video with your teacher too. Hopefully we can get a handle on this for him. ☺

I work in a self contained class. I have so many questions about behaviors. From Pica to how to respond to attention seeking behavior.

I’m known for my infinite patience with aggressive and complicated clients. But spitting? That’s the ONLY time I’ve had to step out for a second to regain composure. Great info. Thanks for sharing.

Can you come to my sons school and tell them? Because I don’t think anyone is having very much patience with him.

that was a great topic we just went thru that but he would spit and catch it or spit on the floor and walk on it we eventually got him to spit in a water bottle most of the time but I also learned if you conquer one behavior another takes its place he is now self harming himself
