i think it’s bc in our communities, we’ve been practicing bad hair habits for far too long. so when they see black women with long hair, they assume it’s down to genetics, instead of haircare and routine.

People also need to realize that it’s common in other ethnicities and races for people to struggle achieving long hair💀 I am a black women, I’ve already applied some of the most evidenced based approaches (approved by my dermatologist) to grow and retain length but alas- my genetics won’t allow it. Shorter growth phase, so no matter what, my hair is meant to be shoulder length🤷🏾‍♀

I just don’t get the logic when people genuinely think their hair doesn’t grow. Like then your braids would never get old, and if you got locs you’d never need a retwist lol.

I mean I know Black women can grow long hair but speaking for myself I’m struggling with that because in the past year I’ve really been taking care of my hair better than I ever have before (weekly washes, steam treatments, DC every week, low manipulation styles, oiling my ends, quarterly trims, etc) and while I notice a difference in my hair in terms of softness and health…it does not seem to be changing in length. Maybe I have an issue with length retention but I’m doing everything my stylist told me to do, I’m not rough with my handling of it…I’m just not seeing the retention and it’s disheartening…and when folx give me advice and discover I’m already doing those things…it’s even more confusing…what do you when you’re already practicing healthy hair habits and your hair length remains the same?

No one in my family has long hair. With a length retention routine I was able to grow my hair almost waist length (fast too). No one believes me and my family is shocked especially since I never had long hair as a child. Every time I try to put people on they dismiss me with “it’s just your genetics” 🤦🏿‍♀

Start telling people check if the want to know if their hair grows, braid on a section of your hair and keep it for 2-3 months, tell me if you see new growth on the roots.

Especially some women WITH 4c hair. They will see another woman with long 4c hair and swear up and down it cant possibly be 4c hair because its long. Or “you have good genes”🤦🏾‍♀

girl they call me mixed (i’m not) as if it’s some gotcha thing and that’s why my hair is long, or they say it’s just genetics. now that i posted the science behind it… no comments lol. they say all of these things to kind of justify why my hair is long and theirs isn’t when the actual difference is that i’ve found what works to retain length for my hair 😩 i think a lot of people are focused on actually growing the hair from their scalps and not retaining the length at their ends

Yes, I think our hair does grow, it’s really just a lack of care or not having found the right method. I took out my braids yesterday and I saw how much my hair had grown (I do my treatments using the LOC method), and I leave it alone. I take out my protective style every 3 weeks to a month.

I completely agree with you, & I’ve tried to explain this to people irl (especially other black women); I get looked at like I have 3 heads or I get metaphorical tomatoes thrown at me. They act like it’s all quantum physics

I realllllyyyy need people to factor diet in. It’s not just the LCO methods and treatments and trims, it’s what you put inside the body too.

Anyone who had relaxed hair experience new growth, so that means our hair actually grows. People are not retaining length due bad hair care practices

As a black woman we’ve been taught TERRIBLE hair hygiene/care over the years - washing once every few months, butters & oils all over our scalp, PERMS, fear of trims, putting mayo, eggs, etc. on our scalp, high tension hairstyles.

They love saying that long hair is rooted in white supremacy because our hair doesn’t grow like white women’s and that we had to accept the fact that 4c hair will forever be short and to wear it in it’s shrunken state all the time. I be arguing that 4c can still be long regardless of shrinkage and that if black women want to manipulate their hair to show its full length then that’s completely okay because some women like having long or voluminous hair.

The funny thing is that so many Black men have long hair, no one questions them. But somehow, Black women are incapable of having long hair. If Black men can have long hair, then why not us?

And the real issue is because most of our moms got our hair permed as soon as they were able/always had it styled in box braids or sengalese twists instead of teaching us how to take care of our hair properly, because they also didn’t know how to take care of their own hair properly

My hair can definitely grow, it’s about length retention. I’ve got fine hair and a slow growth rate (.25 inches a month). My split ends get split ends, I’m not even joking. I am making progress but for some of us, retaining length is a challenge. I think I could probably write a book on all the things I’m doing to retain length.

Genetics play a role in EVERYONE hair growth on this planet earth but I never seen it brought up anywhere else than when a black woman has long healthy hair 😭😭
