Can’t believe no one has mentioned the Eurail Pass, which would take the price down significantly and allow you to get off and on at different cities (though you would need to plan ahead with reservations for some lines).

Did a Karlstad (swe) to Barcelona (ES) through Denmark, Germany, Netherlands and France. On the way back i went through Switzerland. i enjoyed every part of the trip :)
