For me, if someone needs religion to stay sober or be happy then who am I to take that away from them. The problem becomes when it is used to hurt.

It is interesting to me to hear that ‘truth’ is not a core value for some people😵‍💫

i think the most difficult thing about being a black atheist is seeing how much christianity helped us to cope with things like slavery while also seeing how much it holds us back now and knowing that for my community there’s almost no hope to better practice religion when the church is so integral to many black americans.

It’s quite obvious today that truth is not at the top of most people’s core values.

this is me with my mother. i deconstruct and disengage completely from religion, and i can never return there, but i look at my mother who, objectively speaking, without her faith be her pillar her entire life would be doing so much worse at life, personally & socially. there's no merit to destroying her peace for my version of truth, that would be selfish of me, but also unwise on the greater picture.

I really appreciate your view. However, what if we compared religion to the idea of evil. Let’s say that evil and goodness exist in the world. In the same way that it is impossible to live in a purely good world without evil and yet we strive for this world, should we not also strive for a world of secularism despite knowing religion will always be present? Just because religion might always exist, doesn’t mean it ought to, it doesn’t make it good, even in a functional way. The fact that something exists permanently doesn’t entail any goodness in it. I don’t think it’s about accepting religion as being equal to atheism, it’s about recognising the immense value in fighting for truth in a world where people will always reject it.

I disagree. Religiosity is a sign of chaos in society. It is not that people have different core values, it is that for Neil Degrasse Tyson, his curiosity of the unknown is far greater than his fear of the same unknown. But for the religious man, his fear of the unknown is far greater than his curiosity. Ask your self, why do secular countries usually rank highest in happiness? I tell you, it is not because secularism makes people happier, no, it is that happiness gives birth to secularism. Also it is not that religion gives birth to chaos, no, it is that chaos gives birth to religion. People do not become more religious because their core values have changed, they become more religious because their fear has increased.

I feel like more people would be fine with religion if they could stop trying to convert others or challenge others… but then religion would lose power.

I really appreciate your consistent pragmatism. I see the purpose of the atheist idealists… they show the benefits of an alternative. But it’s the pragmatists who move the needle to a place where more people can benefit in the real world. 👏👏👏

There are said to be over 3,000 gods out there and religious people don’t believe in 2,999 of them. The only difference between us is that I don’t believe in one more god than they do.

Generally I think whatever gives you personal comfort without imposing negatively onto others is fine. Some people need the comfort religion provides- as you said. The world can be very cruel and whatever makes that bearable for us should be ok

I remember this paper that said third world countries NEED religion because it provides a lot of things to people who have yet to build their OWN moral compass (among other things). People capable of building their own moral compass is often found in countries with better education (first world)

Bootleg Odyssey :
Religion is needed. Sadly due to how humans cannot comprehend the brutal realities of existence. There is no point, no value, no reason. We are responsible to create it for ourselves. Many cannot do that, they arnt creative, stubborn or strong enough to make their own reason.
