It seems that the people open minded enough to accept progressive Christianity are also open minded enough to realize there's no reason to believe any of it is true. I myself, on my journey of deconstruction, moved from a conservative Christian to a progressive Christian to an atheist. And while my journey from conservative to progressive was a slow and long one, once I hit progressive it was only about about a year until I was atheist.

As a Unitarian I find the community building that is done at church very helpful. I also like the messages and the songs and the debate and discussion. I also like that when I go to a protest, most of my church is there too standing up for democracy.

can we just connect on the fact that community is important for our mental health? i want a ward, a tribe. i want my community to be my neighbors, not people i have to travel the state for. Even traveling one city over is too far.

This is why I am part of the Ethical Society. You get community and surety of belief, without religion or spirituality thats tied to something "divine" other than humanity.

I get this, but I think we could go back to more pagan roots of earth being God and interconnectivity with earth being the foundation of the religion. it wouldn't be perfect, but I think this would better meet the needs we're looking to fulfill.

It’s possible to believe in God without falling for the hierarchy of organized religion. Even Jesus didn’t trust church leaders.

So the question is how do we transform it? What would hold that community together? What would incentivize people to attend this type of church rather than hang out at a friend’s house? Maybe we need to offer substantial benefits like free childcare and other free benefits that meet people’s basic needs today. It has to be framed in a way and offered an away that speaks to them.

I live in the Bible belt. I spoke to a few people during that No Kings protest on Saturday. I was happy when I realized that each of them were atheist too.

My local UU church has gained 100 new members in the last year. People are looking for faith-based community; faith in hope, at least. That said, we are in the DC area, so it could be a bubble.

My parents attend a church of the brethren after being mostly Catholic and then Episcopalian (I think?). I’m happy the church is very focused on being helpful in their community, they have international food nights, etc. But it’s pretty much all seniors and my parents often say it’s a dying church. It actually does make me a bit sad as an atheist who has no desire to join. I see its value for them and am happy they found a better fit after years of searching

do you have a YouTube Channel? if not have you ever considered starting one where you explain your deconstruction process in depth, in a documentary, research based style? I think a lot of people would watch that

Can you explain why you moved from the third way to atheism? I am at that stage of deconstruction where I believe in a loving moral God but not Christianity.

In other words they need an aim to work on as a group. It could just be a group of people meeting up for discussion lol.

i get what you mean in an american christian context but religion and science harmonizing is catholic doctrine, which is in no way "liberal" christianity. plenty of dogma, plenty of science - they literally run major scientific institutions

You didn't "lose your faith in god", you found your faith inhumanity! Okay, that's not a perfect phrase, but you moved/developed/progressed here. You didn't lose, you gained. And we gained as a result! 😀
