I remember feeling so guilty about how much “work” my mom put in to plan holiday stuff and not feeling joy in it. And worrying about not reacting happy enough about gifts I didn’t actually want.

it was like checking boxes for conversations.. and every time i’d try to get personal there was an obvious sense of discomfort and almost an energetic distancing which make you feel GUILTY and wrong for even engaging.

Whoa. You just described 100% of my husband's family interactions with one another. After he went to therapy, he told his parents he wouldn't listen to any complaints they weren't willing to take action on, and they got mad because it meant they had nothing else to talk about.
