The first being “Why is this necessary? Isn’t this what the captions are for?” and the second being “Why did they remove the original mouth movement? Doesn’t this make it less accessible?” and these two comments reflect a really critical misunderstanding of what ASL is, so let me talk about it. ASL is not English. ASL is not “English but visible”, ASL is not “English but with the hands.” Reading English captions is a completely different experience than watching an ASL interpretation. Why? Because ASL and English are two completely different languages. Adding a picture-in-picture interpretation is less equitable with English captioning and more like dubbing a movie in a foreign language. So Disney reanimating these songs in ASL is just taking that access to another level.  So why did they remove the original mouth movements? Why didn’t they just keep the characters lipsyncing the lyrics when they were reanimating it into ASL? It is because they were reanimating it into ASL. When I say ASL and English are two completely different languages, I mean they have completely different grammar and syntax. A huge part of ASL relies on facial expressions and mouth movements, and the original lip syncing would've interfered with that.  Last summer, videos of a theater group performing Hamilton in ASL faced a ton of criticism within the Deaf community - not only because there werent really any deaf people involved in that project, not only because the hand movements were sloppy and inexperienced, but because the signing followed an English sentence structure, not ASL, and the facial expressions and mouth movements that are so critical to ASL were just… not there. The actors were trying to make their signing match up with the English lyrics and it just messed the whole thing up.  A few years ago Deaf performer Joshua Castille got a lot of attention for his performance of Satisfied - and rightfully so, because his singing was clear and expressive. This is because he was signing in ASL. When you put the two performances side by side, which I’ll show in a second, you can clearly understand how ASL is not English… and trying to make it match English by adding English mouth movements just makes the singing less comprehensible, and ultimately less accessible to Deaf audiences. The rest of the video shows a clip of the two different performances of Satisfied from Hamilton. The top shows ASL Theater’s performance and the bottom shows Joshua Castille.
