@thegrieftable: Compound grief is what happens when losses stack faster than your heart can process. It’s trauma layered on trauma — and your nervous system feels every bit of it. The fog, the fatigue, the emotional shutdown, the brain that can’t quite focus — it’s not weakness; it’s survival. If you’ve lost more than one person, you know the way grief overlaps and collides. It blurs time, distorts memory, and rewires your brain chemistry. One loss awakens another, and suddenly you’re grieving the past, present, and future all at once. This is the reality of compound grief — when your system never has the space to heal before the next heartbreak arrives. You are not broken. You’re living through what feels impossible, doing the best you can inside a body and mind that have carried too much pain. Healing from compound grief takes time, compassion, and nervous system care — not perfection or productivity. If this resonates, know you’re not alone. There’s language for what you’re feeling, and there’s a community here that understands. Here at The Grief Table, we honor our grief and love in community.

I definitely have compound grief. My dad passed away 2.5 years ago. My brother passed away 6 months ago, my husband passed 3 days later. I am completely overwhelmed.

I’m not sure what to call my grief. My brother took the lives of our parents before ending his own life this summer. Losing half my family in one day feels like a special kind of torment.

My mom was on hospice, dying of cancer, when my dad suddenly died - likely of a broken heart. He couldn't face losing her after 63 years of marriage. She died 44 days later.

I’ve lost my bff, my 9 yr old niece, my brother, then my mom, and my grandma in the last 8 years. Almost like losing someone every 2 yrs. It’s exhausting.

I lost my husband, then my friend and then my best friend. Everyone every 4 months. And not one person even my therapist hasn’t talked to me like you just did. I just need someone to understand. I just want to have someone give me that

We lost our nephew on Christmas Eve, 2023. We lost our house to a wildfire in June 2024. My husband took his life on April 30, 2025. I can’t take anymore. I lost both of my parents as well. I feel like I have nothing left.

My therapist called it complicated grief recently to me. Sounds like what you’re describing.

My mom died of cancer on a fast decline. Four months later my brother died and then my soul cat, then my grandpa. I have only my kids left. Idk how to stop the random crying, idk how to find energy to do anything, idk how to do shit anymore. It’s been almost 3 years (in March) but my heart and brain don’t know how to move forward
