This whole “Rome never fell, it became the USA” thing is just historically wrong. The Roman Empire didn’t magically turn into anything else, it ended as a sovereign state in 476 in the West and in 1453 in the East. A cultural legacy is not the same thing as state continuity. Modern countries like the USA, the Vatican, Greece, Spain, or anyone else are not “Rome,” they are simply influenced by Roman law, architecture or political ideas just like almost all of the Western world. The only place that actually has direct geographic, linguistic and cultural continuity with ancient Rome is Italy, because Rome was an Italian city, its institutions were on Italian soil, its population and civic identity grew from the Italic peoples, and Latin evolved directly into Italian. That doesn’t mean Italy “is” the Roman Empire, but it is the only modern country that organically descends from the land, language, and people where Rome was born. Saying Rome “became the USA” is like saying ancient Egypt became France because the French built obelisks, cultural influence isn’t state continuity. Rome ended. Its legacy continued everywhere. But its roots remain in Italy.
