@redconsultant: 5 Signs every Manager should pay attention to that signal a high performer is leaving 1. Changes in attendance 2. Low participation in meetings 3. No commitment to long-term projects 4. Burnout due to unrealistic work expectations/workload 5. Increasing frustration with technology #worktiktok #burnout #quitting #manager #highperformance
99.99% of the time, the manager doesn’t know how to manage a high performer (because the manager is NOT a high performer ) and they end up making them absolutely miserable.

High performers will likely flat out tell you they are frustrated with something or need a barrier removed. After chronic escalations and no action - just assume they are looking.

High performers are typically very vocal about how unhappy they are before they stop being vocal. When they stop talking, you know, they are looking for a way out.

OR that high performer has decided to just be a mid level performer.

I'm not leaving. I'm fulfilling all the expectations of my role. I'm just no longer doing extra to help advance the company.

They don’t care. They don’t want high performers.

Or high performers realize they aren’t going to rewarded for that performance. So they check out and want to leave.

High performers can’t work for under-qualified managers. Sadly, promotions are based off who you rub elbows with and not merit these days.

I stopped being proactive. I now ask my boss for recommendations as to what to do when there's an issue to fix. she always pauses before answering, knowing she has to answer, and it's on her. have applied for 2 jobs, fingers crossed.

I think, by the time a high performer decides to leave, it’s mostly too late to change their minds

At this point the high performers already know that boss doesn’t care. And never will.

High performers are no longer willing to sacrifice our health and happiness. While you see these as warnings we see them as work life balance

When it gets to this point it’s already too late. You missed your window. They’re already waiting on that new job offer.

How to send this to my previous manager who was the worst advocate for her employees. Aubrey, too little too late. When your team of 5 changes in a matter of months, it’s not a team morale issue it’s a YOU issue.

Nah I started doing this when I realized my high performance was only getting more work dumped on me with no pay raise. Now I just show up do my minimum required work and leave.

This happens because they get bled. For myself, I will start a role at a salary for THAT ROLE and as they discover my competencies I end up required to do more and more and more and when you try to establish boundaries it's perceived as a performance issue when really, it's an attempt at preservation. Good leadership would have proactive conversations from the get go but by the time it's at this point they either need to step up and offer promotion and/or increase or realize it's too little, too late. Even then, there's a breach of trust and respect that's hard to recover from. Realizing your worth is a toxic leader's worst nightmare.

The first 4 of those basically equate to “you can no longer exploit them as much as you used to”… if that’s the company’s approach to managing talent, they deserve to lose their high performers.

10/20 years ago being a high performer in corporate had direct positive results. Now you only get more work to do for the same compensation.
