When our boy was about 1 1/2 we noticed he started snoring and sleeping with his mouth open… a couple of months passed and it got worse and worse so I took him to the doctor and they always said he just brushed it off as a sore throat… he also happened to always be sick for some reason, croup was constant. We just thought it was from him being at school, because kids are disgusting lol Shortly before his 2nd birthday I thought we should get a referral to a big hospital because something was just not right, he tonsils were ALWAYS so huge you literally could not see his airway. After going through a few doctors we finally got a referral and the doctor said he has to do a sleep apnea test etc, which includes hooking him up to heaps of wires when he’s about to go to sleep and pray he doesn’t rip them off… we didn’t even make it as far as having him take them off from moving around in his sleep, he just would not let us put anything on him. The hospital said they needed that test before making any other decisions and also told us kids usually grow out of whatever “throat issues “ they’re having with their tonsils. I was fuming. So I went to another doctor who spoke English (we live in Japan so sometimes things get lost in translation when explaining things and vice versa) we told him everything, showed him the same videos as I showed those at the hospital and he immediately said “you do not need a test to know that he has sleep apnea and needs his tonsils and possibly adenoids removed ”.. he wrote a detailed referral letter to another big children’s hospital in Tokyo and they finally said yup he needs surgery, his tonsils need to be removed. Unfortunately we had to wait until he was about to be 3 because that’s just how things work in Japan, so during that time we were prescribed some medicines to see if swelling would go down, needless to say it did not…Finally, just before his 3rd birthday we got him in for surgery and the doctor said these are some of the biggest tonsils and adenoids he’s ever seen in a child. Now he sleeps peacefully, mouth closed, through the night, and even has his sweet baby voice back. 💕 Watching him suffer for so long was heartbreaking, but I’m so grateful I trusted my gut and kept advocating for him. Never be afraid to fight for your kids when you know something isn’t right. #parentingjourney #momtok #medical#momtoku#foryou
