Parenti’s point hits perfectly on what annoys me when people say “the system is broken” when talking about the rampant inequality & other issues plaguing the US right now. Like the system is working perfectly for the people it’s intended to serve but we aren’t those people & we never will be!

Capitalism emerged from feudalism. Capitalism created fascism when in crisis at the end of (econ) liberalism and old school imperialism, fascism was too destabilizing and (reluctantly) defeated, capital transitioned to neoliberalism and neo imperialism. neo liberalism continues to expand and is now (really for the past 50 years) increasingly destabilizing enough in the imperial core for historically less exploited workers in the core to notice.

The issue is that under capitalism the betterment of everyday peoples lives is an unintended consequence. When it does happen is a happy coincidence typically at the expense of a nation across the ocean but it is by no means by design of the system.
