she does have native American in her but she went off what she was told. my mother was told she was Blackfoot... we only have Abanaki and Shoshone ancestors. and far back. I suspect someone tried to hide an Asian father or mother and said Blackfoot to cover up the Asian. Cher does look somewhat native American and she never did it for attention. she thought she legitimately was.

She never claimed to be half-Cherokee, she said she had Cherokee roots on her mother’s side (her mother is predominantly white). Bear in mind that many members of the Cherokee Nation are very mixed with white ancestry because of colonization and assimilation.

no... this wasn't ok.... but in the 70s this was very very normal... not saying it was ok, but cher wasn't being deliberately disrespectful, indigenous culture was integrated into a lot of things in the media at the time, often in insensitive and uneducated ways.

Cher has never identified herself as Cherokee. She’s said her mother had Cherokee some ancestry though. The song isn’t autobiographical, nor do I think it was meant to be. That doesn’t excuse her use of native imagery in such a way, probably even looks worse for her, but to say she identifies as Cherokee is disingenuous.

Cher didn’t write the song half breed, it was written by Mary Dean and Cher was chosen to sing it. She was chosen to sing it because she was half Armenian and half white making her in that time of day what they called a half breed. It is published in articles that she encapsulated what the song writer was trying to portray. Women in the music industry at that time and still today don’t have much autonomy over their career choices. Cher was told to sing a song and dress a certain way so she did. So getting on the internet and sharing this incorrect information is wrong. Do your research and stop sharing misinformation. She never once identified as half Cherokee.

My grandma grew up on a reservation and still isn’t “native” enough to get her tribal affiliation. Grew up thinking I was 1/4 Chippewa just to take an ancestry dna test and find out I’m 2% :/
