@cbsnews: A patient with Parkinson’s disease played the clarinet while undergoing deep brain stimulation to help manage her symptoms, giving surgeons a chance to instantly hear the results of the procedure. According to King’s College Hospital in London, Denise Bacon, a 65-year-old retired speech and language therapist from England, had been experiencing slowness of movement and muscle stiffness from Parkinson’s disease, which was affecting her ability to walk, swim and play her beloved clarinet. During this four-hour operation at King’s College Hospital in July, Keyoumars Ashkan MBE, a professor of neurosurgery, performed deep brain stimulation (DBS) – a surgical procedure used on selected patients with treatment-resistant movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease – to implant electrodes in Bacon’s brain.

So for those wondering why they do this. Basically when their working on your brain they need to see all your responses and make sure they aint giving you a glorified lobotomy so they will let you stay awake to make sure everything is fine.

Brains have zero pain receptors! Sinus’s in the head give you headaches from pressure agains your skull! So they numb you and leave you awake while they operate to make sure your brain isn’t accidentally severely damaged

They need to know what parts of your brain control what and how you respond while they’re performing surgery, so they keep you away

My mother also had this surgery, for Parkinson’s, and she said it was the most surreal experience of her life. Being awake, knowing that someone is actively moving tools around in your brain, to help fix you! I can’t wait to show her this video!

For anyone who doesn’t know they are doing this because the brain has no pan receptors and doing a task like playing an instrument helps them monitor brain functions so they don’t damage anything
