in Australia (I think) voting is mandatory even if you just go and doodle on your ballot that still counts as doing your civic duty. here in the US there are tons of barriers to voting that don't exist elsewhere / are actively worked to deconstruct

The treatment of convicts after they serve their time is very strange. They should be able to vote if they are free, can participate in society and are paying taxes. They already served their sentence.

I’ve been so mad about this since I was 16. For YEARS people keep repeating the same LIES like “half the country” voted for this. Voter turnout for general elections is something like 60%. So FORTY PERCENT of eligible voters aren’t voting. Half of 60% of eligible voters is NOT HALF THE COUNTRY.

Mississippi is also one of the Blackest states and so this is downright voter suppression. Like when you think of the march from Selma to Montgomery and John Lewis being beaten so bad, this is what it's about. And when people talk about throwing away the south, this is who they want to abandon.

Texas has this worsening issue as well. I don’t think we’re as poor, and I think more of us vote, but they’re making it more difficult for the economically disadvantaged. I fear this is common in a lot of red states.
