I tell my daughters often — remember we need to be better ancestors than descendants.

You can hire someone to do your genealogy. They can find birth, death, marriage, baptism records from 100s of years. I did it and loved it because it’s based on facts.

This is why cultural appropriation happens. Identity crisis from rootlessness. It fragments humanness.

I have a totally opposite perspective:
1. I was orphaned. DNA identified who my dead bio-parents were
2.Genealogy identified, so far, 336 people who immigrated to America and where they came from.
3. My DNA results are supported by the genealogical research.
4. Being white has nothing to do with anything if it's not in your nature to make race matter.
5. Choosing to be Quaker, at 20, and decades later finding out I'm descended from the first and next 10 generations of Quakers...kizmet.

Even if your DNA is of that country. If you did not grow up with that culture. Language.food. Music. Stories etc. then it quite literally means nothing at all to you. You’re putting on a culture as a costume to make yourself feel interesting. Doesn’t that strike you as very odd ?

❤️Yt is a myth used to create political power for former European nobles. I would encourage anyone who is looking for connection to reach out to the spirits of the land and the protectors of them, the indigenous peoples of the land you live on. sit with them, learn from them, support them the way they ask to be supported. Until we support the indigenous right to exist on their land, we will constantly be looking connection. if we know what it is like to have who our ancestors take from us than support indigenous sovereignty & black liberation. ❤

No, our job was to be American. But it is not wrong to research our ancestry roots

That’s the difference between genealogy and dna testing. Genealogy looks not only for birth/death records, but the stories in obituaries. My grandmother was a well known genealogist. It was never just knowing lineage but knowing the HISTORY of our family and who they were as people. Unfortunately, it’s VERY different for indigenous and afriacan americans as their genealogical records have been purposefully made difficult to document and find. It’s another form of oppression. There are great organizations working to help those communities to fix this. Others are still actively using it to exclude.

DNA is different from ancestry. If you have a family tree that’s much more reliable than DNA. My ancestors were irish and scottish and immigrants yet that’s only a small percentage of my dna because we all inherit it differently

There are studies being done about how DNA stores the memories of our ancestors. So like, if you have an irrational fear of boats, it’s possible an ancestor nearly drowned in their life and the fear from that was carried through to future generations. It’s a fascinating thought that maybe we actually can connect to our ancestors through the pieces we still carry, even if the full story is missing.

I love your message! On the flip side, I’ve found that tracing records through your family tree (I never did a dna test), and even though I don’t have a real sense of what my ancestors were LIKE, it’s given at least some insights into what they WENT THROUGH in their lifetimes. For example, learning my grandmother had a little sister who died when she was 3 or 4. I think I never knew this because it was a ‘normal’ occurrence at the time of her childhood. I learned of unwed couple who arrived before the Revolituonary War. Because she got here only on a servitude contract, he spent SEVEN years building a life and waiting for her. I feel like these things make me MORE likely to recognize our shared humanity.

Personally I just wanna know why all my ancestors decided to leave Europe come to North America. Apparently they also believed in the life of the American dream because none of us have any money😂🥺

as an indigenous person, theres a saying that when we leave the land of our ancestors land, we become wanderers until we return. Im planning to go to my ancestors last location here in Canada soon :)

There you go. I've been doing genealogy for decades and I keep reiterating that no one person should ever rely primarily on a DNA test; you have to do the work. The DNA biology is only supposed to help guide your own research, not complete it for you.

that’s why i’m trying to connect with the culture of the pacific northwest and seattle. although i am a bit jealous of people from other regions (southerners, midwesterners, new yorkers) who have a more defined and known culture compared to the pnw which gets forgotten about
