Caskets are mostly what we get in North America unless you special order or something. Coffins are used almost exclusively in Europe, Australia, etc. I think coffins are better as they look purpose built, are less gaudy and ostentatious in my opinion. Caskets are too ornate; I just hate the ones with frilly satin lines inside. To me it seems, caskets began to replace coffins here in order to beautify or sanitize the death experience. Along with euphemisms such as passed away, it all seems to be intended to make death more palatable. Even the use of the word enbalm. It’s sounds so non envasive when in fact it is. Like it’s not apply balm to the body.
