That’s putting a condition or demand on things. A boundary is “you can continue to do that but I won’t be a part of it. Then that gives them the choice to change or leave. People misinterpret what a “healthy” boundary is. Rewording what she is saying is key. The “if” part is what switches it from a healthy boundary.

My partner set a boundary that I can't come home even to sleep on the couch because he doesn't feel emotionally safe in our relationship after a fight that we had. And I explained to him that I don't really have many options of world else to go and was trying to compromise on. Can we sleep in separate rooms and leave each other alone so that I have someplace to sleep and he said no and I need to stop pushing the boundary. Is this a healthy boundary because to me it seems kind of cruel

I told someone that I won’t accept someone diminishing everything I do for them because they are upset and that they can continue to do that because that’s their choice, but I will walk away because I won’t accept that for me anymore. They told me that I was giving them an ultimatum and attacking them for bringing up that they are diminishing me.

No no no. A boundary has nothing to do with the behavior of someone else. “I don’t participate in conversations where people yell” “i don’t participate in relationships with liars” it’s very simple. It’s like i tell my coworkers . I don’t tell them not to call me on the weekends for work or email me, it’s “i don’t answer work emails or work calls on the weekend” it has no bearing on whether they call me or not, or email me.

It’s about communicating where your space ends and theirs begins, and what happens if that line is crossed. ”I won’t continue this conversation if you yell at me,” is a boundary. “You can’t yell at me,” is trying to control someone.
