they were called water pump pliers, because they were made in the 30s to tighten the packing nut on modle AFord, Caterpillar, etc. they would have to be tighten to stop from leaking pretty often. and when the packing wore out you use them to back the glan nut to repack it.

we call them water pump pliers here, channel locks ( which is a trade name ) is often used to describe them. I call them big mouth pliers.

My dad always called and water pump pliers because back in the day the water pump had a brass packing nut on it and when the water pump started weeping, you would just go down there and give it a slight turn
