Most who claim stoicism just use it as a veneer for their emotional suppression and avoidance.

Stoicism say we should channel our emotions for greater good. and reminds us we are part of human kind. it encourages not emotionlessness nor solitude

killjoyav :
Stoicism’s main point is to not let the uncontrollable bother you which is the reality we do not want to accept due to disappointment and expectation. The other main point is that stoicism is a regulation of emotion, not a suppression. It’s to let emotions flow, and understand that you shouldn’t act rashly to what you don’t won’t accept (thus having a tantrum) it’s just so that we aren’t being controlled by our emotions

I love stoicism as it originally was. I hate stoicism as it has become in alpha male and red pill movements, who constantly blame their followers for not working hard enough. While stoicism teaches 'be gentle with others and be strict with yourself'

BehemothTheLegend :
Stoicism is not suppressing emotions, but feeling through them through a calculated way so that they do not control emotions or lifestyles. We can feel anger, sadness and pain, but our mind will always be stronger than our emotions and we will move forward through what we can control such as our reactions, emotions, thoughts and actions. We also do not let temptation affect our life and control our mind with Hedonistic practices such as glut in over indulging in food and liquor or greed trying to procure wealth and money at the cost of more important things such as family and happiness.

in my opinion, stoicism is most for intellectual people who pursue knowledge of reason. in sum. it's not for everyone

i don’t think stoicism is inherently bad while i do see your point about so much of the human experience being rooted from emotions i think as any other belief or ideology there are teachings that serve us and the unhealthy part comes whenever you try and stop letting it teach something and just become an extremists riding for said ideology and absolutely everything it stands for even if you don’t fully agree

Thus far in my Stoic studies, I've begun to better manage my emotions and reactions not suppress them. TBH, I've also incorporated lessons I learned in guided therapy decades ago. Thus far, Stoicism has helped ground me. Call me a poster boy I suppose.

My counter argument is that unregulated emotions come with huge consequences. I understand the need to feel and stoicism does not go against that. It’s understanding why you feel this way. It’s called being emotional intelligence and stoicism is a form of practice. That’s it

A kite wants to fly high in the air, but a kite cannot do so, without someone controlling the rope to create pressure on the wind. I usually see the kite as people that are really positive, and the person controlling it as the stoic/realistic person. Kinda like Ying and Yang, light and dark etc.

This is such a fun series. To try to play: stoicisim seems to be not asking us to put the cart before the horse rather to tame and control it so the cart doesn’t flip over. It is incomplete in a way that could be seen as suppression of emotions, but I would argue it is necessary to restrain the horse to enjoy the ride too

Stoicism can be good to help deal with issues. love and pain can still be felt bit in an earlyer stage, so we can prevent it becoming painful. it ads choice to what you wish to fully experience

From what I understand, It’s an incomplete one. Stoicism seems to be the emergence of Greek philosophy being turned inward amidst the decline of Greek political structures. Mastery of the inner life became a substitute for mastery of the outer life. In one sense you might even argue that stoicism was a type of proto-existentialism. I say that it is incomplete because it could not address the sheer need that many if not all humans have. We have a need for grace, we cannot always do things through sheer willpower and discipline. We have a need for forgiveness, even when we have rightfully became someone’s enemy. We have a need for humility even when it is our right to exercise our power over someone. Humans get hurt all the time, yet it’s love that can bind up the wound. Love for your enemies, grace towards those who didn’t earn it, and humility/servanthood even when you are in authority over another are all virtues that emerged from Jesus’ teachings.

I can't argue against this because I totally agree with it. I think more people should be aware of the more intense Stoics like Epictetus too, who compared losing a human life to breaking your favorite mug.
