@not_the_real_ems: The Vaquita is a critically endangered species of porpoise, with only 6-13 individuals left. They are the smallest, and most endangered porpoise species, uniquely adapted to the warm waters of the northern Gulf of California. The Gulf of California is the only place in the world they are found. They are endangered due to accidental entanglement and drowning in gillnets, especially those used for illegal totoaba fishing. Some other threats include habitat degradation from factors like pollution and changes in water flow. There has been efforts to save the Vaquita by banning totoaba fishing, but due to them being in such high demand on the black market it has been fruitless. There has also been efforts to keep some in captivity, but those have lead to dead ends as well. They are expected to go extinct in the next five years or less. #vaquita #vaquitas #porpoises #criticallyendangered #inhonor
