As a career filmmaker, who would be this guy’s (he’s likely a Production Assistant, a 2nd 2nd Assistant Director, or an Assistant Location Manager) boss if I was working on this show, he’s doing what we call a ”lockup” which means protecting the set from people accidentally walking into the scene/shot while we’re filming. The stakes on a film shoot are incredibly high with production days on a network funded show costing anywhere from $20k/day to $100k/day and much more for a big budget studio feature film. So when random people somehow get into the shot “lockup team can get into big trouble. We have this saying, if you can see the camera, the camera can see you. And in places like NY and LA where we get extensive permitting to shoot, the police are able to provide a lot of leeway to the crew for keeping the area in which we’re filming clear of passers by. So even though it seems like he was doing the most, he was really just trying to be cautious that this auditor didn’t accidentally become a background distraction. But the auditor was clearly outside the barrier set up for this location and should have been left alone. So this person is probably a little inexperienced and production is a big time “learn on the job” profession. So he just learned a little bit. He’ll get better in the future, I promise.

i've done this guy's job in Atlanta while we filmed 'halt and catch fire' using a lobby of a business complex as a hotel lobby for episode 9.. we asked nicely and explained it's a period show set in the 80s and people immediately moved, and we thanked them

As someone who has worked in the industry, this is not how you deal with onlooking public. We would have stacks of $20 bills, and please and thank yous.

Any film crew who behaves like this towards the public deserves to not be obeyed by the public so he’s replaced as quickly as possible.

if they were worried about pedestrians getting in their shot.. maybe they should have paid more to close off the area.
