Fun fact there's 20 active underground coal mine fires just in PA that the PA DEP is tracking according to their August 2025 report. Centralia is just one of many.

I’m from a similar town- Picher, OK. The govt bought us out when I was in the 8th grade around 2005 because of toxicity and cave-ins. If you didn’t take the money, you were abandoned. No water, electricity, nothing. A few years later, a tornado swept through the town and destroyed half of it. It’s a ghost town now, but past residents come back every year for Christmas and a summer reunion.

I’ve been there. It’s very anticlimactic. It got super popular years ago and they graffitied one of the roads but that got replaced ages years back. Idk if they did it again. You can sometimes see steam, sometimes smell it. It’s chill.

I love when people make videos about centralia! I live only a couple hours away and have gone up there at least a dozen times. Either to walk the highway, drive up the trails, or just look at the stars. It’s sad the highway was closed off from people.

I live 40 minutes away from Centralia. And yes, it is still burning. They took away graffiti highway to keep others from getting into the town.

I went there in 2015 and it wasnt really "on fire" it was warm but not really smoky all the time, the people there are nice but not many of them
