Ronald Regan. How he is viewed in the US and how he is viewed by those in former Soviet nations is vastly different and both are completely valid.

So As an older person I was enraged by Bush and Chaney and especially the wars. Because I have lived through this time line I don't even remember why I was so mad now because what is happening now is so much worse. Another example is that I watched Don't Look Up and was infuriated but now I watch it and say that's exactly the way it is! It's the comparison between what happened in the past and the worst of today.

you are right, our perspectives are filtered through our own (and our times), sometimes cloudy lense.

This is such a fascinating subject and reading magazines from the early 1940s is so useful to understand some of those shifting perspectives - I remember reading the articles showing solidarity with USSR in US film magazines

i would need to write a novella to explain me, my situations and how a tiny girl from a rural, conservative michigan town ended up in a place where i’m so far left. i did go to uni in england. i’ve 3 degrees and have studied wwii since i was 11 and picked up a book at a book fair (summer of my german soldier) spent 6 mo in romania working a drop in shelter for unhoused children in galati. i lived in seattle for a decade. raised an elite gymnast who’s now 21 and done with their 1st degree and working on their 2nd. i’m also 1/2 ojibwe and 1/2 yt mix and spent my childhood trying to figure out where i fit. 21 tells me often that i need to write down my life, cuz it hasn’t been a normal path, but it’s gonna be filled with tears and emotional crash outs, so i haven’t done that yet.

This also leaves out malice aforethought. It suited the West and the fascists they happily worked with to ignore the attrocities of the East.

During the Cuba Missile Crisis I was in elementary school. I lived in a suburb of Fort Worth, Hurst. Hurst existed because of the Bell Helicopter plant and on the other side of Fort Worth existed the bomber plant, Lockheed Martin. We had nuclear bomb drills. They would make us sit in the hallway and put our heads between our knees. I thought this was crazy because I knew as a child that we were a prime target. This has had an effect on how I view history. I learned that we all see from different points of view.

The concentration camps in the west were just as brutal as in the east, I think the difference you were looking for is between the concentration camps themselves and death camps you mentioned.

I’m interested to see how the current iteration of the Palestinian genocide becomes known as the years go on. It’s been mind boggling seeing the way news sources talked about it and occasionally will flip a full 180 in coverage, let alone how it’ll be written down outside of “breaking news” types of sources

I’ve always found it interesting how the Cold War causes the western countries to portray the holocaust in the years following ww2 and up to today. Specifically how in a lot of the west we mention the 6 million Jews that died, but not all the other eastern victims. Not the 3.3 million soviet POW’s, not the 1.8 million Poles, and none of the other eastern Slavs or minorities. Growing up through high school I never once learned about any of this ever. And once you look into it you start to see the reasons why. Once the Cold War started the flow of first hand sources from the east is cut off. And then the only source on the matter really are those who committed the crimes, the Germans. And the ex-Nazi used as sources have it in their best interests to downplay the crimes in the east. And the leadership wanted a strong west Germany, so they didn’t want to sack everyone in western Germany as to weaken their bulwark against the eastern bloc. And so a combination of information stopping from the genocided and the genociders having it in their best interest to keep quiet means that the eastern crimes generally aren’t exposed until far later. And still aren’t taught(at least in my experience) when covering ww2 in schools.

I know while watching TIK history is that the way the German army and atrocities in WW2 has changed over the years. With the Cold War starting and Hitler burnt like KFC, it was easy to at that time blame Hitler and the S.S. The honourable non S.S. came about, even though in reality in let’s say the east, I think it was about 2/3 to 3/4 of German divisions actively participated in the mass slaughter of civilians.
