We had a traveler that had an Ace wrap on her left arm stating she hurt her arm moving. However, months later it was discovered she had a peripheral IV under that wrap. She had been diverting to herself. She was walked off by law enforcement.

My nurse got caught diverting my pain meds after I delivered my second via C-section. 🫠🫣 she told me after so many hours I was only allowed to have a warm blanket for pain. I BEGGED for meds all night and got nothing. The next morning I was doubled over in pain crying when the nurse practitioner came in. Boy did it get nasty up there REAL QUICK.

It’s BAD in nursing homes / assisted livings. Which is incredibly sad.

The trust thing is real. If you aren’t wasting the med IN FRONT OF ME I absolutely WILL NOT sign off for you. Period.

It’s funny ! In Australia all narcotics must have 2 nurses to open the safe, dispense the med and both nurses must go to the bedside and watch the patient take it or nurse administer it. Obviously people still get away with it here, but in the US do you not need a second person to pull the medication and have the second person watch the patient take it ?

I started diverting as an NP! Writing Rx for kids/husband and other family members. Was deep in before I got caught. Traumatizing experience. Been in recovery since 2018 but will forever be shamed and it’s always on my nursing record. 😩

I worked with a nurse where we found a spoon & lighter under the med counter.. she had been doing this for years before getting caught. I definitely think it happens more than we think

Do you think they’re not giving the patient the meds or just taking the waste?

Unfortunately, this is common in dentistry as well especially in offices where they use sedation.

Detox nurse here. I believe that addiction is a disease. Once it takes over nothing else matters. This reminds me of the show nurse Jackie. The “functioning” addicts. mental health & addiction is the core issue here IMO

We had a RN that coded in the ICU bathroom and died from diverted drugs she injected. We also had an Anesthesia resident that thought his game was great! He had labeled syringes and accidentally injected vecuronium in his ankle. He hit the floor. We coded him and he went to rehab!

Also, even if you go watch a waste, if you didn’t watch them pull and open the fresh bottle -someone could switch it for water 😭

I would guess this happens so much more than we think. I would bet that many of these people aren’t even getting high at this point. Their tolerance is probably so high. NOT taking narcotics would impair them and make them sick. Taking narcotics just keeps them well and functioning.

At my hospital you can waste when you pull it or later.. we have had a nurse who gave the dose.. then pulled up the waste.. then put saline back in the vial to waste with someone!! Took them a long time to catch her

Please do more research on addiction before you touch on this subject. Saying I don’t understand why someone would do this is such a privileged take on this subject. You develop a tolerance, they’re not even getting high anymore.

My doctor ordered pain meds for me. My nurse did not want to give it to me. I had to tell her I know that my doctor ordered it he told me and another nurse told her the doc ordered it. She was so mad and told me she also had a migraine like me but she was working.
