I'm also experiencing this. It's so dull and no matter what I do, they just won't participate. It's unbearable in there. I told them I'll be grading lesson activity from now on. I'll report back if there's any improvement.

honesty will go so far; if you tell them how you feel (like you are now) they'll hear the sincerity of your voice. and they'll be willing to listen.

don't force things, it's high school, it's not necessary for anyone to feel good, if you do your job and they do their job, I think that matters most

I find that putting time into building relations is the best. The time you invest in that will come back doubled. Put away learning a bit, and do relationship building stuff. That always work for me. After the time I used on that is not missed, bc they get more done on a shorter time 🫶🏼 english is not my first language, so sorry if my explaining isn’t that good

I have such a hard time believing that everyone suggesting rewards actually thinks that makes a real impact/improvement 😬

Create a Google Form based on how they’re feeling and why they’re feeling that way, things that make them happy, things to improve on your teaching (kids are very honest) and some interests!! Tie their interests into a lesson if applicable or implement some sort of community builder activity to break the ice :) hope this helps!!

I started using an equity wheel, makes them accountable for answers and they get excited because it feels like gambling on participating 😂

I will sometimes scrap a lot of my usual activities/plans and REALLY get down to basics with them. It’s the perfect space to try a new technique or exercise that is outside the box. It often takes just a good day of really breaking the “ice” in a sense to connect with them

as a college student, i’d say grade participation. some of my professors do this and i notice more engagement . but i guess in high school, some people don’t care about their grades, so it might not work

In the elementary grades, a competition will stimulate the kids. maybe attach points to rubrics, and rough drafts and final drafts and the use of figurative language....

I think you might have hit the nail on the head at the end, they might actually hate life - maybe they don't want to hate their life, but they can't fix it either

Have you tried incentives for participation? I hand out tickets for participation and we do a raffle and/or a ticket store for prizes

I try to gameify the activities and give them incentives like brain breaks, candy, raffle tickets, etc.
