In 2001, antiques dealer Kevin Mannis bought an old wooden wine cabinet from eBay. The seller claimed it had belonged to a Holocaust survivor who warned it contained a dybbuk — a restless spirit from Jewish folklore. Mannis ignored the warning and brought the cabinet home. Soon after, he and his family began experiencing strange events: flickering lights, broken objects, and an overwhelming smell of jasmine and cat urine. After giving it to his mother — who suffered a stroke the same day — Mannis decided to sell it. Over the next few years, each new owner claimed to experience the same things: nightmares, shadows, and sudden illnesses. One buyer, museum curator Jason Haxton, wrote a book describing the box as something that “manipulated energy.” Its story inspired the 2012 horror film The Possession, and it’s now sealed inside Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum in Las Vegas. But years later, Mannis admitted he had embellished parts of the story, saying the Dybbuk Box was “a creative experiment” that took on a life of its own.
