My biggest issue with answering “how are you” is my alexithymia and genuinely not knowing how I am most of the time. That advice seems to work well for when you can 1) clearly identify your own emotions state, and 2) that emotional state is anywhere outside of the neutral equilibrium. Genuinely, most of the time I just feel like… a neutral grey. So the answer is usually something along the lines of “Doing alright”. And contrary to pinpointing why you’re feeling good or bad, pinpointing why you’re basically not feeling any strong emotion whatsoever is essentially impossible. That makes it pretty hard to apply the whole “I feel like X, here’s why” formula and make things interesting.
