@jillinewell: All that aside, I think I’m still most uncomfortable with the fact that squids have beaks, seems wrong, though I don’t know what would be better
In 2007 a New Zealand fishing boat caught a colossal squid. It was preserved for a museum in New Zealand.

I was obsessed with giant and colossal squids for YEARS. One of the best days of my life was my freshman year of college when I finally got to go to DC and see the preserved giant squid at the Smithsonian. 🤣

The fact there are many animals that are giant that have hid from humans for so long is terrifying. How many other giant things live here that we can’t see yet😭

I heard that giant squid are the main food source for sperm whales. so you have to imagine how many sperm whales are there and how many giant squid there has to be able to sustain an entire species of whales

You’re allowed to say “we” in moments like this. Knowledge and science is a collective experience, meant to be shared. It’s a “we” thing for sure

and that's just the size sperm whales are willing to tussle with, there very likely could be one BIGGER but the whales just aren't messing with them or the ones who do don't make it back to the surface.

So fun fact, based on the protein/diet analysis of sperm whales it’s estimated the population of colossals is +100,000,000, while giant squid are estimated to possibly be in the billions. The colossals range is only known to be around Antarctica while every specimen of giants comes from everywhere but Antarctica, so you can probably guess they don’t mix well.

But why don’t any of them float to the surface or wash onto shore like other fish or whales do? Where do the bodies go?
