Has the human 'heart' evolved? Is it able to bear more now than it was ever able to bear at the beginning of time? No, it hasn't. While people can be quite resilient, and their resiliency can be strengthened, the heart can only bear so much. It bubbles over with what's inside of it or, maybe, it breaks. The heart was not meant to carry recurring, intense emotional pain. Relentless and prolonged trauma--and for some regularly occurring trauma as in the case of abuse--is too much for one person to carry alone. A heart can become bitter, hard, and cold. Sadly, this heart may resist the help of others because it's not sure if others can be trusted. If this is you, don't close your heart's door and shut out hope. Look up! You're not alone. Take a tiny step of courage to reach for help, strength, and healing from a trusted friend or therapist. The clarity and truth they bring can be a source of safety, encouragement, a refuge, and a start of healing. To remain isolated is to 'wither and die.' It's in relationships that the weight of trauma can be lifted. You are precious. Others can see your value and help you thrive. For those in Christ, he has promised that he will exercise justice on the cruel for their oppressive wickedness. He'll bring down those that use their power to harm others or those that ruthlessly exploit the vulnerable. They're on track for receiving destruction for their wickedness. God will not let them go unpunished. For those that are victims, his eye is actively on you and his ears are ready and quick to hear your heart's cry. He sees what happens in the dark of night, in a violent marriage, or when you're repeatedly bullied because you're vulnerable. He is a compassionate God that suffers with you and will help you. He's a friend that loves you completely. He's a defender of the weak, healer, burden bearer, and the one who tenderly binds up your wounds and sets you your feet on a solid path.
