@vt.physics: The Tiny Tool That Can Shatter Tempered Glass Tempered glass, often used in car side and rear windows, is specially made to be both strong and safe. During production, the glass is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled. This process creates compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress inside the glass. The surface compression makes it resistant to everyday impacts, but if a sharp point like the tip of a rescue hammer creates even a small crack, that crack quickly releases the stored stress throughout the pane. The result is a rapid chain reaction that causes the entire window to shatter into small blunt cubes instead of sharp shards. This safety design allows tempered glass to break easily in emergencies while staying durable in normal use. #Science #physics #glass #engineering #car
