@gaeilgeoirguides: “’Sea” doesn’t actually mean yes 🤯 It means “it is.” An ea é seo do pheann? (Is this your pen?) Sea (it is) Ní hea (it is not) #Gaeilge #Irish #GaeilgeoirGuides #LearnIrish

Has this continued into how Irish people speak English? I’m from the north but feel like I say ‘I am’ or ‘it is’ etc quite a lot instead of just yes. I only realised it because I don’t live in Ireland anymore and people noticed my child saying it

do you think this is still sort of true for English speaking Irish people.? it must've carried over. if I ask my dad if he's been out, for example, he'll always reply "i have"

From my novice understanding, it’s mostly like this in mandarin as well! You can use “duì” 對 but it’s more common to use the verb again

We do this in Welsh too! We say fyddet ti’n hwyr? (Will you be late), then answer bydda/na fydda (I will/I will not)

Are there colloquial replacements for yes/no in Irish that aren’t standard? In Welsh we do the same thing where we repeat the verb to answer yes/no questions, but in everyday speech “ie” and “na” are sometimes used even though it’s not official

Oh, is that why my Irish parents would say, “it is” when asking a yes or no question. Makes sense, sure it does!

Welsh is the same! Well, you can say “ie” (pronounced like yeah), but it’s more colloquial and certainly not what I was taught in school lol
